Coney Flats Trail
Activity: Cross Country SkiingDifficulty: Impossible
Distance: maybe 1 mile
Location: Coney Flats Trail
Description:
Our first real, mountain, cross country ski experience leaves little to be desired. As inexperienced skiers we did learn a lot from this adventure. We learned that pulling a 100+ pound trailer on skis uphill is just about as impossible a task as you could come up with. We also learned that addding skins to our skis would probably be a good idea for such a hilly route. We had fun and we can laugh about our experience now.
The weather was beautiful and the trailhead was moderately busy. We strapped on our skis and hit the trail. The first small hill was a very big challenge. I am not a skier but I made it up only to turn around to try to offer help to Brett pulling the trailer. Not 10 yards on the trail and I was already testing out how soft the snow was. Brett struggled up the hills and I figured out a way to mostly stay on my feet.
After only a short distance and a lot of taking skis on and off because of the impossible hill climbing we decided that there was no way we would make it to the flats. The other people on the trail were all very nice and talked to us about ski skins and differences between AT gear and XCBC set up. We have to decide what will be best with pulling the trailer in the future.
A few scrapes and scuffs on our new skis and a nice big bruise on our ego and we loaded the truck to drive home. It was a nice day to be out in the mountains and it was an adventure looking back on it.
